So, what's a guy like me doing with Sailor Moon on their "favorite anime" list? Well, I know full well that I'm not the only one, as Sailor Moon, for many people I'm sure, was their first (or one of their first) introductions to anime here in the states. Yes it was DiC's drastically altered versions of the first 2 seasons of the show... but for new otaku such as myself at the time (who were not aware of the atrocities done to the show) it was something different from everything else that was out there. (I'm speaking of american animation here... it is rare to find any american animation half as adventurous as anything from Japan.) Later we would find out (and be better for doing so!) that the original Japanese version of the show was far better. Anyway, regardless of the fact that this series may be shoujo, it is still a great series, and can appeal to anyone! ^_^
And as for just why this series has caught my interest? Well, the very first thing about it was it's at the very least a good adventure. But as one discovers more about the series, there are characters with depth who are very believeable. (well, maybe except for the transforming bit.) Artemis and Luna also scored bonus points for me. (As a result, when I got a new kitten, I named her Luna.) More recently, I've come to notice how good the music is in this series as well! |

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon
The central plot of the five Sailor Moon series revolves around an average (below average?) junior high school student by the name of Tsukino Usagi. Luna discovers her and identifies Usagi as the soldier of the moon. Her strengths as a leader and all around friend to the others, once found, offset the fact that she isn't a great student and can be clumsy at times. Her goal is to discover the other four in the team whose mission is to find and protect the Moon Princess of the future for the Moon Kingdom. Not only that, but these five also have the ability to fight evil with different elemental forces merely by transforming into their alter-egos, the Sailor Senshi, each with their own governing planet (and in Usagi's case, the Moon.) What follows is the basic premise of saving the world while trying to juggle their own student lives... Studying, arcades, and daimohn, oh my! There are five series in all of Sailor Moon, and I have seen most of the first four. The S season, where the 'outer' senshi are introduced, is my current favorite, and it also is most likely the 'darkest' of them all. That and it's the only SM series I've seen any of the Japanese episodes of yet (thank you Pioneer!). This show should be seen in its original form by all means! (IMO this is true of all series, actually) The english version is nowhere near as daring plotwise, as it was toned down for a younger audience. That said, at least it was kept interesting enough to make me investigate the show more in the first place! If only Pioneer could get the rights to the first 2 seasons (the ones that started it all) and Stars too... |
